History
Construction began in 1070 over the grave of King Olav II (c. 995–1030), who Christianized Norway and became its patron saint. The building rose slowly across two centuries, substantially complete by 1300. In 1152, it was designated the cathedral for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nidaros. During the Protestant Reformation in 1537, it became part of the newly established Church of Norway. A major restoration campaign, beginning in 1869 and finished in 2001, returned the cathedral to much of its medieval grandeur after centuries of neglect.
