History
The bath’s origins and construction date are not documented in available sources. Over centuries, the ground level of surrounding streets and buildings rose steadily, gradually submerging the hamam below grade.
What you see
The bathhouse entrance is now positioned approximately 2 meters below current street level. The bathing rooms themselves sit a further meter deeper, at about 3 meters below ground—a dramatic illustration of Nicosia’s layered urban history. The structure preserves the traditional plan of Ottoman hammams.
Cultural significance
Büyük Hamam represents the continuity of Ottoman bathing culture in Cyprus. Public baths were essential social and hygienic institutions across the Ottoman world. Its subsidence tells the story of medieval and early modern urban development, as successive building campaigns gradually raised street levels without demolishing earlier structures.
