History
Built during the Ottoman occupation of Macedonia, Kuršumli An functioned as a caravanserai, providing secure lodging and storage for merchants travelling the trade routes through Skopje. The building’s robust design reflected its dual purpose—to protect goods and animals while offering sleeping quarters to traders. Beyond its commercial life, the serai was later adapted for use as a prison, reflecting the evolving needs of Skopje’s administrations across centuries.

The building’s footprint forms a defensive square, characteristic of Ottoman caravanserai design. Its most striking feature is the roof, composed of pyramid-shaped domes that were originally sheathed in lead—giving the structure its nickname, the “Lead Bazaar.” This lead covering was both practical and symbolic, signalling wealth and permanence.
The interior layout reflects functional compartmentalisation. Ground-floor rooms stored merchandise and supplies, while upper floors contained sleeping quarters for merchants. Dedicated spaces housed livestock, with capacity for approximately 100 horses—essential for a caravanserai of its standing.
Cultural significance
Kuršumli An embodies Ottoman administrative and commercial presence in the Balkans. As a caravanserai, it anchored Skopje’s role in regional trade networks connecting Europe, Asia Minor, and the Mediterranean. The building’s survival testifies to the architectural resilience of Ottoman Macedonian heritage.
