History
Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, purchased the estate and its original castle from the Farquharson family in 1852. Architect William Smith of Aberdeen designed the replacement castle, with Prince Albert himself contributing amendments to the plans. Construction was completed in 1856, and the original castle was demolished shortly after. The property has since been expanded and developed by successive members of the royal family. Queen Elizabeth II, who died at Balmoral on 8 September 2022, made it her summer residence.
