History
The oldest building in the complex is the late Romanesque parish Church of the Virgin Mary, constructed in the second half of the 13th century. Originally encircled by a cemetery, the churchyard once held a Romanesque ossuary that stood until the 19th century. The castle developed around this sacred core as the city grew.

The complex comprises multiple distinct structures unified by defensive walls. The Church of the Virgin Mary retains its late Romanesque character. Matthew’s House and the Slovak Church contribute to the urban fabric. A fortified perimeter features bastions and a stone gatehouse with a barbican—the ceremonial entrance through which the complex was historically accessed. The town hall and rectory building complete the ensemble.
