Střekov Castle rises dramatically from a monolithic clinkstone rock that towers a hundred metres above the Elbe. Today, significant portions of the castle survive or have been reconstructed, including the bergfried (keep), palas (great hall), and defensive walls.
History
The castle was established in the 14th century at a commanding position along the Elbe, one of Central Europe’s most important waterways. Its strategic location allowed rulers to monitor and tax river commerce flowing through North Bohemia. Over centuries, the fortress endured the turbulent history of the region, sustaining damage but leaving enough stonework for modern reconstruction efforts.

The castle occupies a steep, single rock formation that dominates the Elbe valley. Key surviving or rebuilt structures include the bergfried, the tall defensive tower characteristic of medieval fortifications, and the palas, which would have housed the castle’s residential and administrative functions. Substantial castle walls remain, tracing the perimeter of the hilltop stronghold. The site commands sweeping views across the river and surrounding landscape.
Cultural significance
Střekov Castle captured the imagination of major creative figures of the Romantic era. Goethe, Richard Wagner, and Czech poet Karel Hynek Mácha all visited and drew inspiration from the site. The castle achieved further prominence through Ludwig Richter’s celebrated painting Passing the Schreckenstein (its German name), which now hangs in Dresden’s Galerie Neue Meister and remains one of the most iconic artistic interpretations of the fortress.
