Kokořín Castle
A Gothic fortress born from 14th-century ambition, destroyed by religious conflict, and resurrected in the early 20th century. Kokořín stands as a monument to resilience in the Central Bohemian landscape.
At a glance
Kokořín Castle rises from the rolling terrain of central Bohemia, its reconstructed walls a testament to restoration as much as original construction. Built in the first half of the 14th century by Hynek Berka of Dubá, the fortress survived centuries of neglect and warfare to become one of the region’s defining landmarks.
History
Hynek Berka of Dubá commissioned the castle’s construction during the early decades of the 14th century, establishing a stronghold in what would become a strategically significant region. The fortress endured intact until the Hussite Wars ravaged Bohemia in the 15th century, leaving it heavily damaged and eventually abandoned to ruin.
For nearly five centuries, Kokořín deteriorated. Between 1911 and 1918, a major reconstruction campaign restored the castle to functional condition. The state nationalised it in 1948, and it was formally designated a national cultural monument in 2001.
What you see
The castle exhibits Gothic characteristics typical of its era and region. The reconstruction of 1911–1918 preserved historical elements while making the structure sound for contemporary use. Visitors encounter both original medieval stonework and early 20th-century restoration work integrated into the standing fortress.
Cultural significance
Kokořín Castle’s importance extends beyond its walls. The surrounding Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area takes its name from this fortress, recognising the castle’s role as a defining feature of the region’s identity and natural heritage.
