The Wanfo Hall was built in 963 during the Northern Han dynasty, a brief independent kingdom that ruled parts of northern China before the Song reunification. This structure ranks among the oldest Buddhist buildings in the country and reflects a period of significant temple patronage across the region.
What you see
The Wanfo Hall demonstrates sophisticated timber engineering through its system of very large brackets (dougong) that support both the roof structure and the distinctive flying eaves. This bracketing system represents the technical mastery of the era. The interior preserves sculptures of exceptional quality and preservation.
