Tomb of Chang Yuchun
The monumental burial site of a commanding general from the Yuan-Ming transition, marked by stone sentinels and preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage monument.
At a glance
Chang Yuchun’s tomb stands on Purple Mountain as a rare example of a high-ranking military figure’s burial from the fourteenth century. The site combines commemorative sculpture with historical testimony to the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties. Its inclusion in UNESCO’s Imperial Tombs designation underscores its architectural and cultural importance.
History
Chang Yuchun (1330–1369) rose to prominence as a military general during one of China’s most turbulent periods. He served across the declining Yuan dynasty and the emerging Ming, positions of considerable authority and peril. Upon his death in 1369, his tomb was constructed on Purple Mountain near Nanjing, the early Ming capital. The site received formal recognition in 2003 when UNESCO inscribed it as an extension of the broader Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties World Heritage site.
What you see
The tomb is approached by an avenue of stone sculptures—horses, tigers, sheep, and warriors—a traditional guardian arrangement. These figures demonstrate the craftsmanship and iconography of fourteenth-century funerary art. The ensemble reflects both military status and the transitional artistic practices between Yuan and Ming periods.
Cultural significance
As a rare surviving tomb of a non-imperial military leader from this era, the site illuminates medieval Chinese statecraft and memorial practices. Its preservation contributes substantially to understanding the Ming dynasty’s consolidation of power and the role of military elites in that process.
