Khajeh Nazar Caravansarai
A restored trading post on the Aras River, this caravansarai stands as testament to the historic Silk Road networks connecting East and West through the Caucasus.
At a glance
Khajeh Nazar Caravansarai rises above a bend in the Aras River, five kilometres west of Jolfa in East Azerbaijan province. Built as a waystation for merchants and caravans, it preserves the architectural traditions of Iranian trade routes. The structure has been carefully restored to reveal its original character.
History
The caravansarai served travellers and merchants traversing the crucial overland routes between the Persian heartland and the Caucasus. Iran’s National Cultural Monument List recognised its importance in 2002. In September 2023, it gained international recognition as one of 54 Iranian caravansarais inscribed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reflecting the shared heritage of these vital commercial hubs.
What you see
The restored caravansarai displays the functional design typical of Persian trading posts—built to provide shelter, water, and security for merchants and their goods. Its position above the river bend offered both strategic advantage and access to fresh water, essential elements in caravansarai planning.
Cultural significance
This caravansarai embodies the sophistication of medieval Iranian commerce and hospitality networks. The 2023 UNESCO inscription places it within a broader system of 54 caravansarais across Iran, collectively documenting centuries of cultural and economic exchange. These structures represent a vanished world of overland trade.
