ARO Building (Patria Block), Bucharest
Horia Creangă’s ARO Building put Bucharest’s modern face on Bulevardul Magheru — an ocean-liner of an apartment block whose cinema hall still runs as the Patria.

The ARO Building — known to every Bucharester as the Patria Block, after its cinema — stretches along Bulevardul Magheru at numbers 12-14. Designed by Horia Creangă and built 1929-1931 for the ARO insurance company, it is a listed monument (LMI B-II-m-A-19116) and a manifesto of Romania’s interwar modern movement.
History
ARO commissioned a headquarters that would advertise modernity itself. Creangă — grandson of the writer Ion Creangă — answered with a long horizontal block of apartments over shops, offices and a vast hall. The cinema was inaugurated in January 1935 and, as the Patria, remained the city’s reference screen for decades.
What you see
Continuous ribbons of windows, rounded corners, and a strict white skin with no applied ornament: the vocabulary is closer to Erich Mendelsohn’s dynamism than to Parisian Déco. The building reads best from across the boulevard, where its full length and the curve of the corner come into view.
Cultural significance
The ARO Building set the tone for the modernist boulevard Bucharest built in the 1930s — the reason the city was later called “little Paris” less often than “the city of Creangă’s blocks” by architecture historians. It stands at the head of any survey of Romanian modernism.

Practical information & getting there
On Bulevardul Magheru between Piața Romană and Universitate (metro M2, either station). The facade is visible at all times. The Ambasador Hotel and the modernist blocks of the boulevard continue the walk northward.
