The Dome of Soltaniyeh is a mausoleum complex built for the Ilkhanid Mongol ruler Öljaitü between 1307 and 1313. Its double-shelled main dome ranks among the world’s largest brick domes, measuring nearly 25 metres in diameter and 50 metres high. Though much exterior decoration has vanished, the interior preserves exceptional mosaics, faience, and murals.
History
Öljaitü, also known as Muhammad Khodabandeh, commissioned this monument as his mausoleum during the early fourteenth century. The complex originally encompassed a mosque, residences, and administrative buildings, though only the dome has been substantially preserved to the present day. The mausoleum entered Iran’s National Heritage List on 6 January 1932 and became part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Soltaniyeh in 2005.

The structure’s defining feature is its innovative double-shell dome—an engineering achievement that allowed unprecedented height and span in brick construction. Eight minarets frame the main rotunda. The interior survives with remarkable decorative programmes: intricate mosaics and faience tilework adorn the walls, while murals enhance the sacred space. Exterior surfaces have weathered considerably, yet the dome’s silhouette remains commanding against the Iranian plateau.
Cultural significance
The Dome of Soltaniyeh became a watershed in Islamic architectural history. Its technical and aesthetic solutions influenced subsequent monumental domes, most notably the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasavi and the Taj Mahal. Scholars compare its epochal importance for Islamic architecture to that of Brunelleschi’s dome for the Renaissance tradition. It exemplifies the synthesis of Mongol patronage and Persian mastery during the Ilkhanid period.
