History
Established in 1833, Coal Mines Historic Site functioned as Tasmania’s (then Van Diemen’s Land’s) first working coal mine. For fifteen years until 1848, it served as a probation station—a place of punishment reserved for the “worst class” of convicts transferred from Port Arthur. Men worked the seams and landscape under conditions designed to break resistance.

The site preserves scattered ruins and extensive landscape modifications shaped by mining and habitation. Structures have largely vanished, but the terrain itself tells the story: scarred earth, altered topography, and the physical marks of industrial extraction remain visible amongst native bushland.
