Bahía de Loreto National Park encompasses a relatively pristine marine ecosystem in the central Sea of Cortez, off the east coast of the Baja California Peninsula. The protected area includes five large uninhabited islands and numerous smaller islets within Loreto Bay, located approximately 203 kilometres north of La Paz.
History
The national park was established by federal decree on July 19, 1996. In 2004, it was designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. The following year, UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site as part of a collective designation that included multiple protected areas throughout the Gulf of California.

The park’s landscape showcases remarkable geological and coastal diversity. Visitors encounter sandy beaches, dramatic sea cliffs, submarine canyons, and marine terraces. The five substantial islands are surrounded by crystal waters that reveal the region’s complex underwater topography.
