Miraflores Charterhouse

History
King John II of Castile donated the site to the Order of the Carthusians in 1442, converting a hunting lodge built by his father Henry III in 1401. A devastating fire in 1452 destroyed the pavilion, prompting reconstruction to begin two years later. Juan de Colonia received the commission; his son Simón continued the work after his death, completing the structure in 1484 under the patronage of Queen Isabella I. The monastery became the burial place of Isabella and her parents, cementing its significance as a royal mausoleum.

The church exemplifies Isabelline Gothic, its western facade decorated with the coats-of-arms of its royal founders. A single nave features a stellar vault—intricate ribbed stonework overhead—with side chapels and a polygonal apse. Every surface reflects the meticulous craftsmanship of the Colonia workshop, from the tracery to the sculptural detail. The cloister and residential quarters follow Carthusian principles of contemplative separation.

Miraflores represents the pinnacle of Spanish Gothic at the moment of transition to Renaissance sensibility. The involvement of the Colonia family—renowned for their architectural innovation—made it a training ground for Iberian master builders. As the royal sepulchre of one of Spain’s greatest monarchs, it embodies the convergence of religious devotion, artistic ambition, and dynastic power in late medieval Castile.
