History
On 8 May 1902, Mount Pelée erupted with catastrophic force. The eruption destroyed the town of Saint-Pierre and killed 29,000 to 30,000 people in the space of a few minutes—the worst volcanic disaster of the twentieth century. Only three known survivors emerged from the devastation. Ludger Sylbaris survived his imprisonment in a poorly ventilated jail cell. Léon Compère-Léandre, living on the city’s edge, escaped with severe burns. A young girl named Havivra Da Ifrile fled by boat to a nearby sea cave, enduring burns from falling ash.
