Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park
A sacred landscape where sandstone cliffs bear witness to centuries of Indigenous artistic expression, protected within one of Alberta’s largest prairie preserves.
At a glance
Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park encompasses rock carvings and paintings created by Blackfoot and other Indigenous peoples across vast prairie terrain. The site straddles the Milk River in southeastern Alberta, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019 for its cultural and natural significance.
History
The park’s rock art represents a continuous tradition of Indigenous artistic and spiritual practice. The site is known in Blackfoot language as Áísínai’pi, meaning ‘it is pictured’ or ‘written’—a name that captures the essence of this landscape as a canvas of cultural memory. On July 6, 2019, the provincial park and its associated Áísínaiʼpi National Historic Site received UNESCO World Heritage recognition.
What you see
Sandstone formations dominate the landscape, bearing petroglyphs and pictographs created over generations. The Milk River cuts through the terrain, creating natural alcoves and cliff faces that served as ideal surfaces for rock art. These carvings and paintings remain visible evidence of Indigenous artistic vision and spiritual practice.
Cultural significance
The park holds sacred meaning for Blackfoot peoples and other Indigenous communities whose ancestors created the rock art. It stands as one of Alberta’s largest protected prairie areas, preserving both ecological and cultural heritage. The UNESCO designation recognizes its outstanding universal value as a site of Indigenous cultural expression and spiritual importance.
