Rainforests of the Atsinanana

A network of six national parks protecting Madagascar’s eastern rainforests—home to species found nowhere else on Earth, shaped by 60 million years of isolation.

At a glance

The Rainforests of the Atsinanana comprise 13 protected forest areas spanning six national parks across eastern Madagascar. These are among the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems and the most threatened rainforests in Africa.

History

Madagascar separated from all other land masses more than 60 million years ago, allowing its plant and animal life to evolve in complete isolation. The forests themselves are relict ecosystems—survivors of ancient environmental changes—that have preserved this unique evolutionary heritage. UNESCO recognized their global significance by inscribing the site as a World Heritage property in 2007.

What you see

Six national parks form this distributed site: Marojejy, Masoala, Zahamena, Ranomafana, Andringitra, and Andohahela. The rainforests stretch along Madagascar’s eastern escarpment, from humid lowland forest to montane woodland, creating distinct ecological zones within a single protected network.

Cultural significance

These rainforests are critically important for maintaining the ecological and biological processes that sustain Madagascar’s unparalleled biodiversity. Lemurs and other primates are among the rarest species dependent on these forests—many found only here. The site’s importance lies not merely in the species it shelters, but in the evolutionary processes it continues to support.
