History
The first coal mine on the site was established in 1847, but systematic extraction began in 1851. By the late 1950s, Zollverein had become one of Europe’s largest mining operations, supplying the continent’s industrial boom for decades. The coking plant, constructed 1957–1961, extended the complex’s productive life but could not prevent inevitable decline. Mining ceased on 23 December 1986; the coking plant followed on 30 June 1993. The site then transformed from a working colliery into a monument to industrial heritage.
