History

The palace complex presents a substantial Baroque composition surrounded by protective walls and anchored by a grand western portal. Within the grounds, the Planetary Garden and Lapidarium of Roman stonework occupy the northern corner. The building itself is organized functionally: ground-level rooms once belonging to Balthasar Eggenberger, holder of the imperial minting license, now house the Coin Cabinet. Upper levels are devoted to the Alte Galerie, displaying paintings, sculptures, and decorative works spanning five centuries.
