Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord

A transformative public park that embraces rather than erases industrial heritage, converting a derelict steel and coal plant into a landscape of memory and renewal.

At a glance

Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord occupies the site of a former coal and steel production facility in the Meiderich district. The 70-hectare park reclaims contaminated land through landscape design that honors its industrial past while restoring ecological function.

History

The site functioned as an agricultural landscape until the mid-19th century, when it was developed for coal and steel production. Operations continued until 1985, leaving the area heavily polluted and abandoned. In 1991, landscape architect Peter Latz and his firm Latz + Partner won a design competition to reimagine the space. Rather than demolishing or masking the industrial infrastructure, they created a framework to interpret it—treating contamination and decay as documents of the region’s economic and social transformation.

What you see

The park retains industrial monuments: blast furnaces, coking plants, and conveyor structures remain visible and accessible. New pathways, plantings, and water features—including a former slag heap transformed into a hill—integrate ecological restoration with historical preservation. Native vegetation gradually reclaims contaminated zones, making remediation visible rather than hidden.

Cultural significance

Landschaftspark exemplifies a paradigm shift in post-industrial landscape design: healing through acceptance rather than erasure. It validates industrial heritage as part of collective memory and demonstrates how landscape architecture can address environmental damage while creating public space. The park has influenced similar projects across Europe and globally.
