History
The Royal Flying Corps established Duxford Aerodrome during the First World War. The site gained historic prominence during the Second World War, playing a vital role in the Battle of Britain and later serving United States Army Air Forces fighter units in daylight bombing campaigns against Germany. Duxford remained an active RAF airfield until 1961, when the Ministry of Defence declared it surplus. The Imperial War Museum began using part of the site for storage in 1969, acquiring full ownership in February 1976.
