Overview
Villa Crespi stands on the southeastern shore of Lake Orta, one of the smallest and most unspoilt of the Italian pre-alpine lakes, overlooking the island of San Giulio and the Sacro Monte di Orta UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 19th century by a cotton merchant inspired by travels to Persia and the Arab world, the villa is an extraordinary example of Moorish Revival architecture in the Italian lakeland. It has been transformed into a luxury hotel and three-Michelin-star restaurant under the stewardship of chef Antonino Cannavacciuolo and his wife Monica.
History
The villa was commissioned in 1879 by Cristoforo Benigno Crespi, a Lombard textile entrepreneur who had visited North Africa and Persia and wished to recreate an Oriental palace in the Italian countryside. Cannavacciuolo, a Neapolitan-born chef trained under leading French and Italian masters, took over the property in the late 1990s and set about reinventing it as a culinary destination. Villa Crespi received its first Michelin star in 1999 and its third in 2022, cementing its reputation as one of Italy’s summit restaurants.
What you see
The building’s exterior is dominated by a slender minaret-like tower, horseshoe arches, polychrome tilework and geometric ornamentation borrowed from Moorish Andalusia and Maghrebi architecture — an incongruous and striking sight in the Piedmontese hills. Inside, the historic rooms have been restored with period furnishings, rich fabrics and lacework ceilings. The restaurant dining rooms offer views across the lake towards the island of San Giulio, combining architectural theatrics with one of Italy’s most serene natural backdrops.
Cultural significance
Lake Orta and the island of San Giulio form one of the most intact Romantic-era lakescapes in northern Italy, long celebrated by writers from Balzac to Nietzsche. Villa Crespi occupies a unique position within this landscape, uniting architectural heritage, natural beauty and culinary excellence into a single destination. Its presence has helped position Lake Orta — historically overshadowed by its larger neighbours Como and Maggiore — as an international cultural and gastronomic destination.
