History
Silver mining transformed Jáchymov from a settlement into a powerhouse of medieval commerce. Beginning in the 16th century, the town’s silver was minted into coins known as Joachimsthalers—coins whose name evolved into the Thaler and ultimately the dollar, the currency that would dominate world trade.
When silver yields declined, the mines adapted. Jáchymov became the first and, for an extended period, the only place on Earth where radium was extracted—a distinction that placed it at the forefront of early atomic science. The Svornost mine, established in 1525, took on particular significance: following the closure of Poland’s Wieliczka Salt Mine in 2007, it became Europe’s oldest continuously operating mine.
