Overview
The museum takes its name from the sculptor Domenico Parisi (1912–2000) and his wife, the painter Mafalda Valle, both of whom worked in the Varese area and donated their artistic estate to the municipality of Cadegliano-Viconago. The collection spans sculpture, painting, and drawings produced across six decades of 20th-century Italian art. The museum sits in one of the most scenic corners of the Varese district, a lake and hill landscape that attracted numerous artists and intellectuals throughout the last century.
History
Domenico Parisi was born in 1912 and trained in the tradition of Italian figurative sculpture, producing portrait busts, narrative reliefs, and monumental works over a long career. He and Mafalda Valle settled in the Varese area, where they maintained studios and became embedded in local cultural life. Following the artists’ deaths, the municipality of Cadegliano-Viconago established the civic museum to preserve and display their combined oeuvre, opening it as a permanent public institution. The choice of Cadegliano-Viconago reflects the artists’ personal attachment to this corner of the sub-Alpine Lombardy landscape bordering Switzerland.
What you see
Visitors encounter Domenico Parisi’s sculpture in multiple materials — marble, bronze, and terracotta — ranging from intimate portrait studies to larger allegorical compositions. Mafalda Valle’s paintings represent landscapes of the Varese area and Lake Lugano alongside figurative works that reflect the mid-century Italian Novecento aesthetic. The villa setting itself contributes to the experience: the building’s rooms provide an intimate domestic scale that suits the personal character of the collection, and its terrace or garden offers panoramic views typical of the pre-Alpine lake district.
Cultural significance
The Parisi Valle Civic Museum is part of a broader network of small civic museums in the Varese district that document the intense artistic activity of the region in the 20th century — a phenomenon linked to the area’s scenic landscape, its proximity to Milan, and the presence of wealthy patrons. It preserves a self-contained artistic legacy that would otherwise risk dispersal, making it a reference point for scholars of Italian Novecento and post-war figurative art.
