Jiaohe Ruins
A haunting ancient city perched on a leaf-shaped plateau between two river valleys, Jiaohe commanded the Silk Road as capital of the Tocharian kingdom of Jushi.
At a glance
Jiaohe rises from a natural fortress of sheer cliffs 10 kilometres west of Turpan in Xinjiang. Known locally as Yarghul, the ruins occupy a dramatic defensive position carved by two deep river gorges. The site functioned as a crucial trading hub along the ancient Silk Road.
History
The city served as the capital of the Tocharian kingdom of Jushi, a significant political and commercial centre in the region. Its strategic location at the convergence of trade routes made it vital to cross-Eurasian commerce and cultural exchange during the Silk Road era.
What you see
The ruins preserve the layout of a city built to exploit its remarkable topography. Buildings cluster atop a leaf-shaped plateau, their remains testament to adaptation within the cliff-bound terrain. The natural fortress required no defensive walls—the geography itself provided protection.
Cultural significance
Jiaohe embodies the intersection of Central Asian power, trade, and the multicultural world of the Silk Road. The Tocharian kingdom represented a distinctive branch of Indo-European peoples, and this capital reveals how ancient societies thrived in extreme environments through architectural innovation and strategic positioning.
