Overview
Savona is the capital of the Province of Savona, on the western Italian Riviera. It is both a busy commercial seaport and a coastal city of around 58,690 inhabitants. The town overlooks the Ligurian Sea and serves as the principal urban centre of the Riviera di Ponente.
History
Savona grew from ancient settlement into a significant medieval maritime power on the Ligurian coast, long competing with nearby Genoa for control of trade and the sea. Over the centuries it developed fortifications and a layered historic centre reflecting medieval and Renaissance phases. It later became the administrative capital of its surrounding province.
What you see
The city presents a compact historic core set against the harbour, with churches, towers and palazzi typical of the Ligurian coast. The waterfront combines the active port with seafront promenades, while the surrounding hills frame the town against the sea. The setting on the Riviera di Ponente gives Savona its characteristic Mediterranean light and maritime atmosphere.
Cultural significance
As the capital of its province and a historic seaport, Savona is a reference point for the cultural and economic life of the western Italian Riviera. Its maritime heritage and historic centre make it a representative example of a Ligurian coastal city.
