Imperia
Imperia is a coastal city and comune in the region of Liguria, Italy, and the capital of the Province of Imperia. Historically the capital of the Intemelia district of Liguria, the modern city was created in 1923 by uniting the towns of Porto Maurizio and Oneglia together with several surrounding village communes.

Overview
Imperia is the capital of the Province of Imperia on the western Italian Riviera. It is a coastal city formed from two distinct historic centres, Porto Maurizio and Oneglia, each with its own character. The city looks onto the Ligurian Sea in the Riviera di Ponente.
History
Historically, the area was the capital of the Intemelia district of Liguria. The modern city of Imperia was created on 21 October 1923 by combining Porto Maurizio and Oneglia, together with the surrounding village communes of Piani, Caramagna Ligure, Castelvecchio di Santa Maria Maggiore, Borgo Sant'Agata, Costa d'Oneglia, Poggi, Torrazza, Moltedo and Montegrazie. This union gave the city its dual-centred urban structure.
What you see
Imperia is marked by two contrasting cores: Porto Maurizio, rising on a headland with its older hillside town, and Oneglia, more commercial and tied to the olive-oil trade. Between and around them stretch the harbour, seafront and Riviera coastline. The setting combines maritime activity with the terraced landscape typical of western Liguria.
Cultural significance
As a provincial capital on the Riviera di Ponente, Imperia is a centre of Ligurian coastal life and is strongly associated with the region's olive-oil heritage. Its creation from two historic towns makes it a distinctive example of twentieth-century Italian urban unification.
