Chamois
Chamois is a small mountain comune in the Aosta Valley, in north-western Italy. It is best known as the only municipality in Italy that cannot be reached by motor vehicle: visitors arrive by cable car from Buisson or on foot along a path from the neighbouring hamlet of La Magdeleine. Perched on a sunny terrace above the Valtournenche, it is a quiet high-altitude village within sight of the wider Matterhorn massif.

Overview
Chamois sits on a high terrace in the Valtournenche area of the Aosta Valley. It is the only Italian municipality that is not reachable by car, which has helped it preserve a quiet, traffic-free character. Access is by cable car or by a walking path from La Magdeleine.
History
Chamois became a separate parish only in 1681, when it was detached from Antey-Saint-André. The village church, dedicated to Saint Pantaleon, was built in that same year. The structure seen today results from a rebuilding carried out in 1838, reflecting the long continuity of religious life in the village.
What you see
The village is a compact cluster of mountain dwellings and the parish church of Saint Pantaleon on its elevated terrace. Without through traffic, the streets and surrounding meadows retain a calm, pedestrian feel. The setting opens onto the high peaks and pastures characteristic of the upper Valtournenche.
Cultural significance
As Italy’s only car-free comune, Chamois holds a distinctive place in the country’s Alpine heritage and is often cited as a model of slow, low-impact mountain settlement. Its parish church preserves a continuous tradition of community worship dating to the late 17th century.
Practical information
Chamois has no road access for cars; reach it by cable car from Buisson (Antey-Saint-André) or on foot from La Magdeleine. Check the official comune website for cable-car timetables and seasonal information.
Getting there
From the Aosta Valley floor, drive or take a bus to Buisson, then use the cable car up to Chamois. An alternative is the walking path that begins at La Magdeleine. No private motor vehicles operate within the village.
