History

The Aosta Valley has been a strategic Alpine corridor since Roman times, linking the Italian plain to the passes of the Great and Little St Bernard. Communities such as Aymavilles developed around feudal estates and castles that controlled the valley’s roads and farmland. The Castello di Aymavilles, with its four cylindrical corner towers, is the most prominent reminder of this seigneurial past.

Aymavilles is the ideal destination for those looking for a location rich in history, surrounded by green vineyards and carefully cultivated orchards. Just 8 kilometers from Aosta, it is at the gates of the Gran Paradiso National Park but it is also a strategic point as a base for excursions throughout the Aosta Valley. Just one minute from the Aosta Ovest motorway exit, it is a true mountain town where guests can find themselves among ancient traditions, genuine flavors and unspoiled nature.



The Castle is certainly the most recognizable element of the Municipality, for its position and architecture whose origin dates back to the 12th century and the Pont d&rsquo;A&euml;l aqueduct bridge, a historical monument of international importance and the only one of its kind, whose visit is mandatory. It was built in 3 BC. and it is a great work in masonry and blocks of cut stone, 82.5 meters high from the level of the waterway and a length that exceeds 50 meters. Then we find the Church of Saint Martin and the Church of Saint L&eacute;ger. The first was built around 600 and counted among the first churches in the Aosta Valley. It was rebuilt in 1724 and on its facade a significant fresco depicting the Christ between San Leodegario and San Martino. The religious historian Abb&eacute; Henry instead traces the origins of the Church of Saint L&eacute;ger to the first settlement of the Benedictines in the Aosta Valley. In the belfry there is the oldest dated bell of the Region, cast in 1372. Of great interest is the crypt dating back to its original part from the 8th century.



The morainic slopes of the area are particularly suited to the cultivation of vines, which characterizes the entire landscape. Characteristic element is the &quot;hill&quot; of Les Cr&ecirc;tes, which winds through the vineyards and from which you can admire, in a privileged position, the city of Aosta and some of the most beautiful castles in the region. There are also numerous paths and farm roads that cross the vineyards for pleasant walks, during which it is not uncommon to meet farmers at work, bee hives or grazing cows. The importance assumed by the municipality in the wine sector has meant that Aymavilles was included among the &quot;Cities of Wine&quot;. Do not forget a visit to discover the highest hamlets such as: Ozein, Turlin, Vieyes and Sylvenoire; places to discover and appreciate.
