Overview

Vendicari covers 1,512 hectares (about 3,736 acres) of protected coastline. Its mosaic of lagoon, beaches, dunes and salt pans supports a rich ecosystem. Around 180 bird species are recorded as visiting the reserve each year.

History

The reserve was formally established in 1984 and opened to the public in 1989 to safeguard its wetlands and shoreline. Within its boundaries are ruins from Ancient Greece and the remains of a Byzantine necropolis. An old tuna fishery, the tonnara, also stands as a record of the area’s traditional coastal industry.

What you see

The landscape combines a large lagoon, open beaches, shifting sand dunes and historic salt pans. Migratory birds such as pink flamingos, spoonbills and herons gather in and around the wetlands. The disused tonnara and archaeological remains add a layer of human history to the natural setting.

Cultural significance

Vendicari is internationally recognised as a vital stopover on bird migration routes between Africa and Europe. By protecting both habitats and historic structures, the reserve preserves an unusually complete record of natural and cultural heritage on the Sicilian coast.

Practical information

The reserve is managed with marked trails and designated access points. Opening hours and seasonal access can vary. Check the official website for current details before visiting.

Getting there

The reserve lies between Noto and Pachino in the Province of Syracuse. It is most easily reached by car along the coastal roads linking the two towns, with parking at the marked entrances; trails then continue on foot into the reserve.
