Gabriele Rossetti Square

A public plaza in southern Abruzzo anchoring a city whose fortunes span Greek and Illyrian settlement, Roman prosperity, medieval destruction, and Renaissance revival under the D’Avalos family.

At a glance

Gabriele Rossetti Square sits at the heart of Vasto, a coastal Adriatic town with roots reaching back to the 12th century BC. The square and its surrounding city centre reflect successive layers of occupation and rebuilding—from ancient Greek, Illyrian and Frentan populations through the Roman era, the Aragonese period, and modern times.

History

The territory occupied by present-day Vasto was first settled by Greek, Illyrian and Frentan populations in the 12th century BC. In 91 BC, the settlement became the Roman Municipality of Histonium, flourishing as an important fishing village and Adriatic port until its destruction by the Lombards during the Middle Ages.

Vasto was rebuilt as a stronghold during the Caldora Lordship and regained prominence in the Aragonese period under the D’Avalos family. Philip V of Spain elevated the centre to the rank of City in 1710. The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries brought political growth, cultural production, and the establishment of the Vastese Republic, earning Vasto recognition as the “Atene degli Abruzzi”—the Athens of Abruzzo.
