Lake Scanno
Abruzzo’s largest natural lake, cradled between the Marsican Mountains at 922 metres altitude, formed millennia ago by a massive landslide that dammed the Tasso river.

Lake Scanno straddles the territories of two municipalities: approximately three-quarters belongs to Villalago, one-quarter to Scanno. The lake lies midway between these two towns in the upper valley of the Sagittario river, surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks including Montagna Grande to the west and Monte Genzana to the east.
History
The lake’s origins trace to a cataclysmic geological event. A massive landslide detached from Mount Genzana blocked the course of the Tasso river sometime between 12,820 and 3,000 years ago, creating the natural basin that is now the lake. This ancient upheaval remains visible today in the immense landslide scar of Mount Rava that overlooks the Sagittario valley.
What you see
The lake’s distinctive heart-shaped silhouette is best appreciated from the Frattura Nuova viewpoint, where the geography and surrounding peaks create a striking visual form. Small sections of shoreline have been adapted with artificial pebble beaches for swimmers. The maximum depth reaches between 30 and 32 metres during flood periods.
Cultural significance
As Abruzzo’s largest natural lake, Scanno holds ecological and recreational importance for the region. The lake’s formation by landslide demonstrates the dynamic geological forces that shaped the Apennine landscape. In winter, seasonal torrents create temporary satellite lakes—Cupaglione, Lago Secco, Lago Pio and others—fed by rainfall and snowmelt, adding to the area’s hydrological complexity.
