Gallerie delle Prigioni

A contemporary art gallery housed in restored Habsburg-era prison buildings at the heart of Treviso’s Piazza Duomo, presenting works from the Imago Mundi collection and emerging artists.

At a glance

Gallerie delle Prigioni is a venue for contemporary art located in the historic centre of Treviso. The galleries occupy the recently restored former imperial Austrian prison, now repurposed as a cultural space to showcase works from the extensive Imago Mundi collection alongside new commissions and established and emerging artists.

History

The building dates to the Habsburg period, when Treviso was under Austro-Hungarian rule. The former prison stood in Piazza Duomo until recent restoration transformed it into a contemporary art venue. Architect Tobia Scarpa oversaw the restoration, preparing the structure for its new cultural purpose.

What you see

The restored building retains traces of its carceral past while accommodating modern gallery spaces. Scarpa’s intervention balanced preservation of the structure’s historical character with the functional demands of a contemporary art venue, creating an unconventional setting for exhibitions and cultural programming.

Cultural significance

The Gallerie delle Prigioni house the Imago Mundi project, a major contemporary art initiative supported by Luciano Benetton. The collection encompasses more than 150 works by over 25,000 artists. The gallery’s location in Treviso’s civic square and its adaptive reuse of a historic prison building underscore the project’s commitment to making contemporary art accessible to the public.
