The hotel’s founding story centers on Julius Grünwald, a young Austrian who arrived in Venice and fell in love with the daughter of Mr. Bauer, director of the Hotel de la Ville. Their marriage soon gave way to a commercial partnership, establishing the BAUER Grunwald Hotel.
The building was later acquired by Mr. Bennati, a Ligurian shipbuilder with business acumen and a passion for hospitality. Bennati undertook a comprehensive restoration of the original Gothic-Byzantine facade and expanded the structure onto Campo San Moisè. His most celebrated addition was the opening of the “Settimo Cielo” (Seventh Heaven) terrace on the seventh floor—a transformative feature that made the hotel the most modern in Venice.
In recent decades, Francesca Bortolotto Possati, nephew of Arnaldo Bennati, initiated a substantial renovation of the building and strategic commercial reforms, charting a new contemporary direction for the hotel.
