A noble Venetian country residence transformed across four centuries, from Chiericati family seat to the ancestral home of writer Antonio Fogazzaro.
At a glance
Villa Fogazzaro Colbachini stands as a layered architectural document of Veneto’s landed gentry. Originally built as a rural retreat for the Chiericati family in the late 15th century, the villa underwent significant expansion and renovation in the 19th century under new ownership.
History
In the second half of the 1400s, the villa served as a country residence for the noble Vicentine Chiericati family. In the early decades of the 1800s, Giovanni Antonio—grandfather of the Vicentine writer Antonio Fogazzaro—purchased the property. In 1846, he commissioned Vicentine architect Antonio Caregaro Negrin to oversee the villa’s expansion and architectural renovation.
Alongside these works, an oratory was constructed on the grounds, reflecting the devotional practices of the resident family.
What you see
The villa exhibits the overlay of multiple periods. The original late-15th-century structure forms its core, while 19th-century modifications by Caregaro Negrin introduce later stylistic layers. The associated oratory remains an integral feature of the complex, its interior housing a notable altarpiece by Vicentine painter Giovanni Busato—a work of considerable artistic merit within the domestic sphere.
Cultural significance
The villa embodies the evolution of Venetian villa culture across four centuries. Its connection to Antonio Fogazzaro, one of Italy’s significant 19th-century literary figures, adds intellectual resonance to its architectural heritage. The presence of Busato’s altarpiece anchors the site within Veneto’s artistic tradition.
