Caffè Meletti

A refined café in Piazza del Popolo, opened in 1907 and celebrated as a gathering place for Ascoli Piceno’s intellectual and social elite.

At a glance

Caffè Meletti occupies a distinctive pink-façaded building on Piazza del Popolo, positioned to the left of the Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo. Since its inauguration on 18 May 1907, it has served as a principal meeting point for the city’s most prominent figures, blending cultural and social life within its Liberty-style interior.

History

The building predates the café by more than two decades. Engineer Marco Massimi designed it between 1881 and 1884 to function as the Palazzo delle Poste e Telegrafi (Palace of Posts and Telegraph). It was constructed on the site formerly occupied by the Picchetto della Dogana, an earlier customs facility.

In the early years of the 20th century, postal operations relocated to a wing of the nearby Palazzo San Filippo. The vacant building was then converted into Caffè Meletti, establishing itself immediately as a venue for Ascoli Piceno’s most illustrious residents and a nexus of cultural discourse.

What you see

The café retains the refined character of the Liberty style, an Italian variant of Art Nouveau. Its most striking feature is the pale pink exterior, which distinguishes it conspicuously from the surrounding historic buildings while harmonizing through careful architectural proportioning and detailing.

Cultural significance

Caffè Meletti holds designation as part of the Association of Historical Places in Italy. Beyond its architectural merit, it represents a continuity of civic life—transforming from a communications hub into a space where art, thought, and society converge.
