Braies Lake
An alpine lake of striking clarity, ringed by Dolomite peaks and home to one of Europe’s most celebrated hiking routes.
At a glance
Braies Lake sits at 1,496 meters elevation in Val di Braies, a valley branching from Val Pusteria in the heart of the Dolomites. The lake covers approximately 31 hectares, stretching 1.2 kilometers in length with a width of 300–400 meters. Its famous intense blue water—the result of glacial clarity—reflects the surrounding rock formations, most notably the dramatic Croda del Becco.
History
Braies Lake is a barrier lake, formed when a landslide from the Sasso del Signore blocked the Rio Braies stream. The geological event created a natural basin now recognized as one of the deepest lakes in the autonomous province of Bolzano, reaching a maximum depth of 36 meters with an average depth of 17 meters.
What you see
The lake’s defining character comes from its crystalline water and mountain setting. Three sides are enclosed by Dolomite peaks, creating a amphitheater of pale limestone and dark rock. Water temperature peaks at 14°C, reflecting its alpine origins. The surrounding landscape belongs to the Fanes–Sennes and Braies natural park, protecting both the lake and its ecological context.
Cultural significance
Braies Lake serves as the starting point for Alta Via 1, known locally as “Lalassica,” one of the Dolomites’ most celebrated long-distance trails. This route extends south to Belluno at the foot of the Schiara Group, making the lake a gateway to some of Europe’s most dramatic mountain hiking. Its photogenic qualities have made it a landmark destination for landscape photographers and alpine enthusiasts worldwide.
