Cadini di Misurina
A UNESCO-recognized mountain group in the Eastern Dolomites, featuring dramatic peaks that rise above the pristine waters of Lake Misurina.
At a glance
The Cadini di Misurina form part of the Eastern Dolomites and are recognized as the fifth group designated by UNESCO as a Natural World Heritage Site. Located in the province of Belluno, these mountains overlook Lake Misurina and derive their name from the Cadorino term ciadn, meaning basin or circus valley, which describes the high valleys that extend throughout the massif.
History
The Cadini have long served as a landmark for the Dolomite region. Their name reflects the geological and geographic character recognized by local inhabitants—the basin-like formations created by glacial activity that shaped the landscape over millennia.
What you see
The highest peak is Cima Cadin di San Lucano at 2,839 metres, followed by Cima Eötvös at 2,825 metres and Cima Cadin Nord Est at 2,788 metres. The group is bordered to the north by the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Croda dei Rondoi; to the east by Croda dei Toni and Gruppo del Popera; to the south by Val d’Ansiei, Marmarole, and Sorapis Groups; and to the west by Lake Misurina and the Cristallo Group. The dramatic limestone formations display the distinctive vertical walls and rugged pinnacles characteristic of Dolomitic geology.
Cultural significance
As part of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites, the Cadini represent an exceptional example of mountain landscape and geology. The peaks and valleys attract mountaineers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts from across Europe, making the area significant for both conservation and outdoor recreation.
