A mountain valley in South Tyrol that serves as a gateway to the Tre Cime Natural Park and some of the Dolomites’ most celebrated peaks.
At a glance
Val Fiscalina is a valley in the Sesto Dolomites that begins in the village of Sesto and extends into the Tre Cime Natural Park. The valley road terminates near the hamlet of Moso at a parking area adjacent to the Dolomitenhof hotel, positioned at 1,454 metres above sea level. The location functions as a principal entry point for accessing some of the region’s most recognizable mountain formations.
History
Val Fiscalina has long served the communities of the Val Pusteria as a route into the high alpine landscape. In October 2007, a significant geological event altered the valley’s landscape when a landslide descended from Cima Una on 12 October. The rockfall measured approximately 100 metres in height, 30 metres in width and 10 metres in depth, with estimates of displaced material ranging from 60,000 to 150,000 cubic metres. The event produced an extensive dust cloud but caused no casualties.
What you see
The valley frames views of the Sesto Dolomites’ signature peaks. From this vantage point, visitors encounter the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the Croda Rossa di Sesto, the Crode Fiscaline, the Cima dei Tre Scarperi, the Croda dei Toni and the Cima Undici, among others. The rocky amphitheatre of peaks creates a dramatic alpine setting. The landscape reflects both the enduring geological formations and the more recent transformations from natural earth movements.
Cultural significance
Val Fiscalina represents a crucial junction between settled valleys and the protected alpine wilderness. Its position as a gateway to the Tre Cime Natural Park makes it essential to the recreational and conservation landscape of the Sesto Dolomites. The valley embodies the relationship between South Tyrolean mountain communities and the dramatic geology that defines the region.
