Perched at 2,410 metres on the summit of Northern Grigna in the Lombard Prealps, this refuge stands as a historic waypoint for Alpine explorers. Originally named Capanna Grigna Vetta, it was among Italy’s earliest high-altitude mountain huts.
History
The refuge was inaugurated on 10 October 1895 following a design by engineer Giannino Ferrini. It became the second summit hut opened on the Italian side of the Alps, after the Regina Margherita observatory hut on Monte Rosa’s Gnifetti peak (built in 1890 at 4,550 metres).
In 1926, following substantial expansion funded by Luigi Brioschi, the refuge adopted his name in honour of the benefactor. The Second World War dealt it severe damage: it was set on fire and destroyed in 1944, then faithfully rebuilt in 1948.

The refuge reflects early Alpine hospitality architecture, rebuilt to honour its original design principles. Its location on the exposed summit affords panoramic views across the Prealps and surrounding valleys.
