A dramatic four-kilometre limestone gorge carved by the La Foce stream between two Apennine peaks, featuring walls that soar nearly 200 metres above the valley floor.

The Gorges of Celano—also known as the Aielli-Celano, Foci, or Foce gorges—form one of the central Apennines’ most striking erosion features. Protected within the Sirente-Velino regional natural park, this narrow ravine separates Mount Sirente from Mount Tino (Serra di Celano). The gorge narrows to just three metres in places, yet remains passable for experienced hikers traversing its length.
History
The gorges bear witness to geological forces that have shaped the landscape over millennia. Near the ravine stand the remains of San Marco ai Casaleni (Aielli), an early hermitage, and the monastery of San Marco in the Arano valley, which was formerly dedicated to Santa Maria Intra Fucem. These religious structures suggest the area held spiritual significance for centuries.

Rocky walls rise almost 200 metres in the deepest sections, their vertical faces weathered by water and time. The average width of five to six metres creates an intimate, cathedral-like atmosphere beneath the stone. The stream that carved this passage—La Foce—still flows through the gorge, audible in the silence of the canyon.

As a designated Community site of interest and component of the regional natural park, the gorges represent both geological importance and recreational value. The presence of medieval hermitages and monasteries indicates long human engagement with this dramatic landscape, where nature and spiritual contemplation intersect.
