A Lombard fortress crowning the promontory above Varenna for over a thousand years, this lakeside stronghold defended the territories of Queen Theodolinda and offers panoramic views across Lake Como.
At a glance
Castello di Vezio rises from a dramatic promontory overlooking the village of Varenna on Lake Como’s eastern shore. The medieval fortress has guarded this strategic vantage point since the Lombard period, commanding views across the water and the surrounding landscape.
History
Built as an ancient Lombard fortress more than a thousand years ago, Castello di Vezio was erected to defend Lake Como and the possessions of Queen Theodolinda, whose influence extended across the region. The castle underwent partial restoration in the mid-twentieth century, returning the structure to public view after centuries of weathering.
What you see
Today the fortress stands with a watch tower at its core, accessed by a small drawbridge that speaks to its defensive origins. A primary curtain wall encircles the structure, punctuated by the remains of an angular tower. The strategic positioning on the promontory amplifies the fortification’s commanding presence.
Cultural significance
The castle represents a rare surviving example of Lombard military architecture in Lombardia. Beyond its historical role, the site has become notable for the discovery of the Lariosauro, a prehistoric marine reptile found near the fortress, now featured in an onsite exhibition that connects the region’s deep geological past to its medieval heritage.
