A thirteenth-century fortress transformed into a cultural venue housing two specialized museums: one dedicated to historic phonograph recordings, the other to the craft of violin making.

La Rocca, as locals call it, stands as Noceto’s dominant landmark—a quadrilateral keep surrounded by crenellated walls and four circular corner towers. Since 2005, following comprehensive restoration, the castle has operated as the Castle of Music, hosting the B. Slawitz Ancient Disc Museum and the International School of Violin Making.
History
The fortress dates to the thirteenth century. The Sanvitale counts, lords of Noceto, reconstructed it in the 1300s and again in the mid-1400s under Pier Maria Rossi, who gave the structure its present form. For centuries the castle served as the seat of local administration, justice, and militia operations until the abolition of feudal fiefdoms in 1805.
The castle’s transformation into a cultural institution began in December 2005 after careful restoration work adapted the ancient walls for modern use.
What you see
The mighty quadrilateral keep dominates the composition, reinforced by a perimeter wall punctuated by four circular towers. These defensive features command views across the surrounding plain and first hills. The 360-degree panorama from the keep’s summit remains one of the castle’s most striking experiences.
Inside, a verdant garden planted with broad-leaved and evergreen trees evokes a late Gothic enclosed garden, providing a peaceful counterpoint to the fortress’s martial exterior.
Cultural significance
The castle embodies the political and social history of the Emilian plain, serving as both defensive stronghold and administrative center. Its conversion into a music museum reflects contemporary efforts to preserve medieval architecture while activating it as a living cultural resource. The violin-making school connects the castle to the region’s rich artisanal traditions.
