Castle of the Villa (Romeo Castle)
A compact medieval fortress perched on a hilltop near Vicenza, long associated with the legend of Romeo and Juliet through its proximity to a sister castle and a tale of literary inspiration.
At a glance
The Castle of the Villa occupies a strategic position at 234 metres above sea level in the territory of Montecchio Maggiore. Together with the Bellaguardia Castle across the valley, it has acquired the names Romeo and Juliet’s Castle respectively. The two modest manors stand roughly three hundred metres apart on a panoramic hilltop overlooking the surrounding landscape.
History
Local tradition credits Luigi da Porto, a Renaissance writer and nobleman from nearby Montorso Vicentino, with drawing inspiration for his Historia from the sight of these two castles. His Historia, a tale of star-crossed lovers, later inspired Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The romantic naming of the castles gained currency in the mid-nineteenth century, though the buildings themselves date to an earlier medieval period. The castle has undergone restoration work, including the addition of stairs to access the keep.
What you see
The castle presents an irregular plan, shaped by its rocky hillside setting and natural topography. The southern entrance was defended by a corner tower that projects from the walls, still bearing visible corbels and drainage channels. A keep stands at the north-west corner, its entrance positioned several metres above ground level—a defensive feature suggesting former wooden structures once leaned against the inner walls. Modern restoration has made the keep accessible via a new staircase.
Cultural significance
The castle embodies the intersection of medieval military architecture and Renaissance literary legend. Its association with Luigi da Porto’s work connecting it to Shakespeare has made it an enduring symbol of the Verona region’s cultural heritage, despite the romantic naming being a later invention.
