Antico Caffè Greco

A legendary Roman coffee house established in 1760, housing one of the world’s largest private art collections and a meeting place for writers, artists and scholars for over two and a half centuries.

At a glance

Antico Caffè Greco occupies four rooms filled with more than 300 artworks displayed throughout its intimate spaces. The café remains an active gathering place where patrons experience both exceptional coffee and centuries of accumulated cultural history.

History

Nicola opened Antico Caffè Greco in 1760 as a haven for intellectual discourse. For generations, the café attracted writers, artists and thinkers seeking conversation and refreshment. Every first Wednesday of the month, the “Group of Romanists”—an ancient scholarly circle focused on Rome—continues to convene here. Since 1940, their proceedings have appeared in the annual publication Strenna dei Romanisti, released each April 21 to mark Rome’s founding. In 1973, the Sala Rossa hosted the photo shoot for singer Mia Martini’s single “Minuetto / Tu sei così.”

What you see

The café’s four rooms preserve period character while serving as galleries for the extensive art collection. The Sala Rossa, named for its distinctive décor, remains one of the most historically significant spaces. Original furnishings and atmospheric details evoke the atmosphere that once captivated Rome’s cultural elite.

Cultural significance

Antico Caffè Greco represents a vanishing model of European café culture—a democratic space where intellectual exchange and hospitality merged. As the world’s largest private art gallery open to the public, it transforms a working coffee house into an unexpected museum. The café’s unwavering commitment to quality products and scholarly patronage maintains a direct link to its 18th-century mission.
