House of the Faun
One of Pompeii’s largest Roman residences, preserved by Vesuvius’s eruption in 79 AD, named for the bronze satyr statue that once graced its impluvium.
At a glance
The House of the Faun occupies nearly all of Insula 12 in Regio VI, spanning approximately 2,970 square meters. Its monumental scale and decoration reflect the wealth and sophistication of its Roman owner. The house takes its name from a striking bronze satyr sculpture positioned within the impluvium, the water basin at the heart of its atrium.
History
Initial construction dates to the third century BC, when the house was considerably smaller and centered around a large vegetable garden. Around 120 BC, during the second century, the structure underwent radical transformation. Builders incorporated adjoining properties and raised the floor level by approximately one meter, creating the expansive residence visible today. The house remained inhabited until Vesuvius’s eruption in 79 AD buried the city under volcanic ash and pumice, preserving its contents and layout for future generations.
What you see
The house exemplifies the atrium-peristyle design characteristic of wealthy Roman dwellings. The impluvium served as both a functional rainwater collection system and a display space for fine art. Multiple rooms radiated from the central atrium, while the peristyle garden provided light and ventilation to interior chambers. The scale of the residence—nearly occupying an entire city block—demonstrates the power and status of its inhabitant within Pompeii’s social hierarchy.
Cultural significance
The House of the Faun stands as one of archaeology’s most important windows into Roman domestic life. Its architectural evolution across three centuries reveals changing tastes and building techniques. The preservation of rooms, furnishings, and decorative elements provides scholars and visitors with intimate knowledge of how the Roman elite lived, worked, and organized their domestic spaces.
