Fortunago

A hilltop village of 370 residents in the Oltrepò region, recognized as one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, with roots stretching back to the medieval period.

At a glance

Fortunago sits on the hills dividing the Coppa and Ardivestra valleys in the Oltrepò, a distinctive landscape of the Pavia province in Lombardy. The village is part of the Comunità Montana Oltrepò Pavese and carries official designation among Italy’s most beautiful settlements.

History

The town emerges in documented records during the tenth century. Early on, local lords governed Fortunago as vassals of the bishop of Tortona, but territorial control shifted in 1164 when it came under Pavia’s jurisdiction.

By the fourteenth century, the Giorgi Pavese family held it as a fief—an estate that also encompassed the neighbouring settlement of Borgoratto. The fractions of Gravanago and Sant’Eusebio, by contrast, remained communal property under the Ruino family, who maintained their allegiance to Tortona’s bishop.

What you see

The village preserves its medieval character within the Oltrepò’s undulating terrain. Its setting among hills and valleys creates views across the surrounding landscape, while the compact settlement pattern reflects centuries of organic growth.

Cultural significance

Fortunago exemplifies the hill villages of the Oltrepò, a region whose architectural and landscape heritage merits protection. Recognition as one of Italy’s most beautiful villages reflects both its visual charm and its role in preserving rural Lombard traditions.
