Arte Laguna Prize
An international contemporary art competition launched in 2006, showcasing multidisciplinary works from emerging and established artists across the globe at Venice’s historic Arsenal.
At a glance
The Arte Laguna Prize is an annual competitive exhibition dedicated to contemporary art across multiple media. Organized by the cultural association MoCA (Modern Contemporary Art), it brings together artists from dozens of countries to present work before an international jury of museum directors, curators and critics.
History
Founded in 2006 by the MoCA cultural association, the prize emerged from the vision of the Arte Laguna studio, an artist collective based in Venice. In 2010, the award received recognition as “representative prize” of the President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano. Since its inception, thousands of submissions have arrived from artists worldwide, with the 2016 finalists’ exhibition alone representing participants from 44 countries.
What you see
Each year, finalist works are exhibited at the headquarters of the Venice Arsenal, the historic shipbuilding complex that has served as a cultural venue for contemporary art. The exhibition space accommodates diverse artistic expressions in a monumental, water-surrounded setting unique to Venice.
Cultural significance
The prize has evolved to reflect contemporary art’s expanding boundaries. From its original focus on painting and photography, it now encompasses sculpture, installation, video, performance, digital and virtual art, land art, urban art, and design. This expansion documents the shifting frontiers of artistic practice over nearly two decades.
