Darvaza: The Door to Hell

A burning gas crater in the Karakum desert has blazed continuously for over five decades, earning its fearsome nickname from locals and drawing thousands of visitors annually.

At a glance

Darvaza is a crater of accidental origin located approximately 260 km north of Ashgabat and 90 km from the village of Erbent. The crater spans 5,350 m² and has become one of Turkmenistan’s most recognizable natural phenomena.

History

In 1971, a drilling operation searching for oil caused the ground to collapse, opening an escape route for natural gas beneath the surface. To prevent worse environmental consequences, the gas was deliberately ignited. Since then, the crater has burned continuously, creating the dramatic spectacle that has captivated travelers and locals alike.

What you see

The crater presents a stark landscape of fire and geology. Flames emerge from the abyss against the pale desert terrain, most dramatic during darkness when the glow intensifies. The surrounding area remains barren and otherworldly—a direct result of decades of intense heat and combustion.

Cultural significance

Known colloquially as “The gates of hell” and “The door to the underworld,” Darvaza embodies both geological curiosity and human consequence. The crater represents an industrial accident transformed into a geological monument—a place where technology, nature, and disaster intersect visibly on the landscape.
